Flow observes the water in the canal locks in Netherlands.

With about one third of the Netherlands below sea level, water management within the canals is a precise and important aspect of everyday life. Weeks after my arrival in Maastricht, while out cycling, as I crossed a bridge and found myself gazing at a canal lock- the area between the two water levels- I observed the gates closing, and watched this immense volume of water crashing against the walls and itself, producing an almost hypnotic pattern- a kind of controlled chaos. Over several months I documented the movement of the water, and also the eerie siren-like sound of the canal gates opening and closing.

These studies of the turbulent water are reflections on ideas of dissonance formed within the landscape. There is an anthropomorphic impulse, and I find myself looking for meaning within these patterns.
