Bark, 2022-23

Digital Photograph, dimensions variable.

Bark is a series of photographs taken during walks through Pune, India.

In 2022, I came across a tree with some odd markings on it- they didn’t seem to be made for any specific purpose, and I was oddly disturbed by them. I spent the next several months documenting various trees around the city where humans or human activity had left some mark.

The bark becomes a surface where time, in different ways, continually accumulates. How might one read these points of contact between the tree and the humans; where the trees, over years, have gathered many stories, and been the site for perhaps the oldest function- as a place for ritual; they have been carved, painted, tied, and with time have sometimes even consumed the objects that have tried to stifle their growth; swallowing them, till it seems that the wire has almost become a part of the tree.
